Almost 50 playing members together with many helpers and other colleagues turned out in force to make it a special Captains Day for the popular Terry Steel.
In splendid sunny conditions there were many splendid prizes to be won with the majority only able to win one prize. John Trendell proved the one exception as he won nearest the pin on the 15th and finished on the white line on 11 for the longest drive nearest the white line.
The day provided an unexpected winner as Sid Chaplin played a superb round of golf to win Captains Day with a quite splendid 40 points and earn a cut to 19 in doing so. Newcomer Ron Murray (19) continued his fine form with 37 points and edged Nigel Rickard (13) into third spot who also achieved 37 points with Murray’s back nine the telling factor.
Andrew Nash (7) picked up the sratch prize with his gross 77. In the various handicap sections the Captain’s son Kevyn Steel won the 21-28 section on count back from Eddie Stretch with both players scoring well in achieving 34 points. Again count back decided the 16-20 section with Graham Carter edging out Chris Shawyer. Both players scored 35 points. Frank Howroyd played good golf to take the 0-15 section with 34 points while Peter Moir’s 31 was enough for second. Other winners were Best Back 9 Tony Ball 19 pts., Front 9 Hugh Brown 21 points.The veterans prize went to Mick O’Brien 35 points while wily campaigner Bob Clark took the Committee’s prize with 34 points on count back from Dave Smith.
There were other nearest the pin prizes on the 1st and 10th won by Harry Smith and Peter Mahoney respectively whilst Ray Beadell won nearest the pin in 2 on the 9th.
In the afternoon the gentlemen paired up with the Ladies for a mixed greensomes over 13 holes. Alan Berry and Ruth Rickard amassed a quite stunning score of 35 points almost 3 points a hole! Their nearest challengers were Nigel Rickard and Kay Fagg who amassed 27 points. Terri Hirons won nearest the pin on the 10th.
