Echo Report 24th March: MID-WEEK MEDAL; SINGLE STABLEFORD

Belfairs Golf Club

An excellent performance by Neil Arends (83-20=63) saw him finish a clear winner in the Mid-Week Medal from nearest rivals Tony Hayes (92-21=71) in second and third placed Frank Howroyd (83-11=72).

The single stableford competition produced a much closer affair with just 1 point separating the first 4 places. The eventual winner was Harry Smith (35), winning on countback from Ray Jones and Ray Beadell (34) just behind in third.

Echo Report 17th March: MONTHLY MEDALS

Three monthly medals were contested last week and Friday’s event went to the consistent Harry Smith whose nett 68 was more than sufficient to take first place from runner-up Ray Jones (74) and third placed Peter Upton (75).

Club captain Chris Shawyer extended his current winning run by taking both the weekend medals.  nett 74 on Saturday was just enough to win a close contest from Mark Duigid (75), but on Sunday, Shawyer’s  68 eased him comfortably clear of second placed Ray Beadell (74) with ian Mudie (81) taking third spot.

Echo Report 10th March: SINGLE STABLEFORDS; DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

Competitions continue at Belfairs despite only 9 holes in play and Ray Beadell found it no obstacle on his way to winning the first Single Stableford with 38 points, narrowly beating Steve Bucke on countback with Chris Shawyer a close third (37).

Shawyer quickly made amends however in the Single Bogey, finishing All Square in front of Alan Berry and Ray Beadell, both 2 down.

A disastrous 18th hole cost Andrew Nash the Single Stableford as his 40 points was not enough to prevent Chris Shawyer (41) winning his second competition of the month with Tony Hayes (38) taking third spot.

In the Daily Mail Foursomes, Baz Patel and Lawrence Schooley continued their fine run, this time beating Ballards Gore 1 up.

Echo Report 18th February: FEBRUARY MEDALS

Despite the recent wet weather closing the back nine, Belfairs members were still able to compete in in the February medals last weekend

On Friday, Rays Jones carded a nett 67 to take first place from Harry Smith (70) with Derek Way (74) in third.

Saturday’s event went to Alex Tindell (73) holding off the challenges of Chris Shawyer (76) and Ray Jones, but the performance of the week  was on Sunday with Bharat Patel (66) finishing 11 shots clear of runner up Ray Jones (75) and third placed Ray Beadell (79).

In midweek, Keith Richardson’s 72 took the honours closely followed by Neil Arends (74) and Frank Howroyd (74).

The first semi-final of the Winter Singles saw Patel continue his good run of form and win from Nigel Warder 1 up.

Echo report 29th November: CAPTAIN & LADIES CAPTAIN DRIVE-IN

It was all change at Belfairs Golf Course last week as the new captains performed the traditional drive-ins.

On Thursday, Ladies Captain Kay Fagg was Pearly Queen for the day as she brought a touch of the East End to the first tee. Members and guests performed a rendition of London songs before Kay stepped up and hit her drive down the fairway. The cockney experience was nicely completed with pie and mash served in the clubhouse.

The Sport of Kings came to Belfairs on Sunday as Club Captain Chris Shawyer arrived on horseback resplendent in jockey silks. Thankfully, Chris displayed better golf than horsemanship and his tee shot landed squarely on the green, much to the amazement of members who had predicted otherwise.

Echo Report 5th November: RELF FINAL; NOVEMBER MEDALS; WEEKEND ORDER OF MERIT

The one outstanding gold leaf final was completed last week as Baz Patel and Lawrence Schooley took the Relf Foursomes beating Nigel Warder and Russell Johnson.  4 up after the morning round, a spirited afternoon fight back by their opponents was not enough to overcome the deficit  and Patel and Schooley persevered to claim victory 4&3.

The monthly medals were contested over the weekend and produced some fine golf despite the damp and misty conditions. Consistent Frank Howroyd carded a creditable gross 77 (nett 66) to take Friday’s event, finishing 2 shots clear of runner-up Peter Gregory (68) and third-placed David Watson (70).

On Saturday, a missed short putt on the first could have cost Kevin Gough the medal as it needed countback to eventually decide the outcome. In the end it was Gough (76-9=67) who emerged the winner from Andrew Nash (77-10=67) with both players comfortably ahead of Harry Smith (87-16=71) in third.

Best nett score of the weekend belonged to Nigel Warder (78-13=65) as he wrapped up Sunday’s medal pursued by Tony Hayes (88-21=67) and Steve Bucke (83-16=67) contesting the minor places.

The Weekend Order of Merit was decided on Sunday with Ray Beadell taking the overall winner trophy and Ray Jones the prize for the best 20 cards.
