Echo Report 9th June: STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP; DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES
Despite the glorious sunshine, a strong breeze and thick rough made scoring very difficult in the Strokeplay Championship on Sunday and it was Russell Johnson who prevailed in the conditions to take the honours. Leading the field after the morning round with an 81, Johnson improved in the afternoon to card a 78 (159) and win comfortably from runner-up Baz Patel (171) and third-placed Steve Mann (171).
Playing at home on Saturday, Patel and partner Lawrence Schooley recorded their fourth consecutive win in the Daily Mail Foursomes, this time beating Crondon Park 2 up. The tournament is now regarded as the greatest amateur golfing event in the world with more than 190,000 players competing in their club qualifying rounds and the Belfairs pair now go into the 5th round draw as one of the remaining 128 clubs.
Echo Report 26th May: CHARITY CUP; MID-WEEK MEDAL; JANUARY MEDALS
Harry Smith showed little charity to his opponents taking both the Mid-Week medal and Charity Cup in the space of 10 days. A nett 67 won the medal for Smith finishing ahead of Ian Douglas (71) and Neil Arends (72) and a 1 shot cut in handicap did not stop him from carding a nett 70 to comfortable win the Charity Cup from runners-up Richard Mounsey (75) and Ron Murray (75).
The postponed January medals were decided last week and on Friday it was the turn of new member Ian Douglas to make his mark with a fine 67 to beat Frank Howroyd (70) with Harry Smith (72) in third. Douglas also featured in Saturday’s event, this time finishing third behind winner Lawrence Schooley (68) and Ray Jones (70). Nicholas Mounsey (67) recorded victory in the Sunday medal with a win from Andrew Nash (70) and Richard Mounsey (73).
Echo Report 19th May: GORST BOWL; MONTHLY MEDALS: DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES; LADIES COMPETITIONS
The annual Committee Outing took place last week and this year’s event was won with a fine performance by Jon Watson, scoring 39 points to take the overall competition. Past and present committee members competed for the Gorse Bowl and club captain Chris Shawyer took the honour with 36 points to just prevail from runner-up Steve Bucke (35) and third placed Mark Duguid (34). Joan Smith comfortably secured the ladies prize with 34 points.
In the Southgate-Brown Cleek difficult conditions contributed to high scoring over the 36 holes of strokeplay, but the consistent Ray Beadell (151) overcame the problems to win from Robin Fagg (153) and Neil Arends (156).
In the monthly medals, Friday’s event was won by new member Ian Douglas (71) with countback deciding Ron Murray (73) as runner-up and Mike Wellham in third (73). Alex Tindell’s 67 secured Saturday’s medal from Barry Meddle (71) and Harry Smith (73) and on Sunday, Baz Patel (67) took the honours and was promptly rewarded with a 1-shot cut. Steve Bucke (71) and Mark Duguid (71) shared the minor placings.
Patel also featured in another fine performance last week as he and partner Lawrence Schooley extended their run to three consecutive victories in the Daily Mail Foursomes with an emphatic 4&3 home win against Thorpe Hall.
The ladies section was also busy as Sue Meddle continued her recent run of good form with victory in the medal, her nett 72 enough to beat Hazel Webber (74) into second and Andrea Clarke (76) into third.
Hazel Webber ‘s week ended on a high, beating Teresa Hirons to win the Belfairs Challenge Cup and also taking the Beryl Newton Trophy with victory over Linda Wellham.
Husband and wife combination, Frank and Joan Howroyd, enjoyed a comfortable win in the E. Dale Jones Foursomes.

The Spring renewal of the Roger Foreman Shield was played on Sunday and in another closely fought, but very sporting contest, Belfairs retained the trophy beating Southend GC 9 ½ - 6 ½.
David Watson’s nett 68 (90-22) secured the Mid-Week Medal with consistent Neil Arends (89-20=69) in the runner-up spot and Mike Wellham (90-19=71) in third.

Belfairs Quiz Night Raises £1140
It was a night of brain teasers on Friday as Belfairs Golf Club hosted a Charity Quiz to raise funds for the local Disabled Riding Club. All raffle and quiz prizes donated by club members and friends of the riding school and the sell-out event included a fish & chips supper. The initial amount raised was £570, but on the winning team was Lesley Barry, Finance Director for Hockley based company Seetec, and she promptly announced that Seetec would match that figure taking the total raised to £1140. Paul Harford from the Disabled Riding Club said “It has been a great evening and we can now purchase much needed new riding hats for each of our members”. Belfairs club captain Chris Shawyer added “We are delighted that the evening went so well and we are especially grateful to Lesley and Seetec for their very kind contribution.
Echo Report 14th April: Leslie Wood; Daily Mail Foursomes; Monthly Medals
Belfairs contested the first round of the Leslie Wood Team Championship on Sunday, but their campaign was short-lived, losing a closely fought match to visitors Crondon Park. The morning foursomes started all one way for Crondon taking a 0-3 lead until Rod Hall & Andrew Nash pulled one back and then Steve Mann & Kevin Buck steadied the ship to go into the break at 2-3. The afternoon singles was a much closer affair and Ray Hallett led the way with a fine 5&3 win, but despite further successes for Nash, Buck and Kevin Gough and a half for Peter Mahoney, Crondon rallied to take the tie 6 ½ -8 ½ .
It was a different story in the Daily Mail Foursomes however, as Lawrence Schooley and Baz Patel posted their third consecutive victory in the competition, this time winning at Rochford 5&3 against a strong home pairing.
High scoring was attributed to the blustery conditions in last week’s April medals. In Friday’s version, Frank Howroyd’s nett 73 (84-11) was enough to secure first place from George Moss (91-17=74) in second and Michael Flynn (92-18=74) in third.
On Saturday, Steve Bucke carded a 72 (88-16) to take first place from Alan Berry (90-17=73) and third placed Ray Beadell (91-16=75).
Countback decided Sunday’s contest with both Kevin Gough (81-9) and David Bucke (95-23) posting 72’s, but it was Gough who took the winner’s prize with Robert Clarke (101-26=75) filling third place.
In the ladies section Sue Meddle continued her recent run of form winning the monthly medal with a 75 (93-18) with Joan Smith (85-07=78) taking the runner-up spot on countback from Hazel Webber (104-26=78)
