Echo Report : 21st May NORMAN PLUM TROPHY & BUST BOWL

Belfairs Golf Club

Belfairs contested the first round of the Norman Plum Trophy against Braintree on Saturday and an in a nail biting finale, it was countback that determined the eventual winner. With both the home and away teams finishing in a dead heat with the number of matches won and then further tied with the total number of holes won, the deadlock was finally broken as Braintree’s first pairings beat their Belfairs opposites.  A disappointing result for Belfairs, but an exciting finish to a match played in the best possible spirit.

The ladies played for the Bust Bowl in very wet conditions but Sue Meddle battled through to take the trophy with 28 points from runner-up Hazel Webber (24) and third placed Joan Howroyd (24).

Echo Report : 14th May LESLIE WOOD; LADIES MEDAL; COMMITTEE OUTING

Belfairs played North Weald in the Lesley Wood Championship second round and the home side just claimed the spoils after a nailbiting battle with the visitors. The morning foursomes saw Belfairs just ahead at 3-2, but North Weald soon reduced the deficit in the afternoon singles and with the match tied at 7-7, the result was still in the balance until last man out, Alan Elliott, secured the win on the 18th green.  Belfairs now play host to The Burstead in the last sixteen.

In the ladies section, Joan Howroyd carded a nett 80 to win the monthly medal closely pursued by Pam Hayhurst (80) in second and third placed Alex Meddle (80).

At Friday’s Committee Outing, Mark Duguid and Ian Mudie tied on 34 points with the former just shading it on countback to take the Gorse Bowl with Frank Howroyd (32) in third. The guest competition was won by Alex Tindell with an impressive 39 points from runner-up Nigel Warder (32).

Echo Report : 7th May SOUTHGATE-BROWN CLEEK; MAY MEDALS; LADIES SPRING MEETING

A busy week of competitions began with the prestigious Southgate-Brown Cleek over 36 holes and a fine win by new member James Clarke whose nett total 136 saw him finish clear of runner-up Rod Hall (141) and third placed Frank Howroyd (144). Howroyd, however, did not take long to gain compensation as on Friday his nett 70 was good enough to take the monthly medal with Nigel Warder (73) and Neil Arends (75) taking the minor places.

Saturday’s medal saw Alex Tindall card a creditable 67 to win from Chris Shawyer (70) and Jon Howley (70) and in Sunday’s version, new member Richard Chamberlain took the honours with a nett 67 from fellow newcomer Steve Cooper (69) in second place and seasoned campaigner Mark Duguid (71) in third.

The performance of the week, however, came in the Ladies Spring Meeting where Pam Hayhurst pulverised the field to win with 38 points from runner-up Barbara Hall (31) and third placed Hazel Webber (27). Pam also caught the attention of the handicapper and receives a 2 shot cut.
